Lawsuit Settled in DPS Roadside Search

On July 13th, 2012 two women were on their way to Oklahoma to enjoy a day at the local Casinos. While driving down the freeway one of the ladies threw a cigarette out of the window and what happened next may most definitely be a shock to most people. After seeing one of the women throw the cigarette out of the passenger side window, State Trooper David Ferrell pulled the two Irving women over and proceeded to accuse the women of smoking marijuana. He proceeded to his cruiser and called for backup. While waiting for State Trooper  to arrive he asked Angel Dobbs to step out of the car and once again proceeded to question the young woman about her smoking marijuana. The police dashcam video was produced by the women and their attorney and in the video Trooper Farrell can be clearly heard yelling at the women that they can be cited for throwing their cigarette butts out of the window and littering.  He insisted to Dobbs who was standing outside of the vehicle that he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car. Once Trooper Helleson arrived to assist Trooper Farrell in the search she proceeded to put on latex gloves and when asked about the gloves by the victims they stated “don’t worry about it.” In the lawsuit it states that both women were subjected to cavity searches by the female trooper. What makes matters worse is that the female trooper failed to change gloves between the two searches which is standard procedure. The story was immediately made public and after doing so State Trooper Helleson was terminated by the Texas Department of Public safety and also indicted on several charges including: sexual assault and official oppression. The male State Trooper is on paid suspension but is being indicted on a theft charge currently. No drugs were ever found during the traffic stop. Both women filed suit and their attorney Charles Soechting released a statement saying that the victims have settled for $185,000.
